Trump-Xi Meeting at Risk of Postponement

According to TSN.ua: U.S. President Donald Trump may push back his scheduled April meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping unless Beijing responds to calls for help in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions in this vital waterway for global oil shipments have escalated following a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran, which has also driven up worldwide oil prices.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

As a critical corridor for international oil transport, the strait’s stability is essential to global trade. Trump stated that

“it only makes sense that those who benefit from this waterway help ensure nothing bad happens there.”

However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian offered no direct reply to Trump’s appeal, signaling uncertainty in U.S.-China relations.

Conditions in the Strait of Hormuz grew tense after the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran began. Consequently, oil prices have risen due to threats to shipping in the region. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that the strait remains open to vessels worldwide, except for American and Israeli ships.

In response to the escalating situation, the Pentagon has decided to deploy additional Marine units to the area of operations against Iran. This underscores the seriousness of the crisis and Washington’s intent to secure navigation in the region. As the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson noted,

“The situation in the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent waters is tense, affecting international trade in goods and energy. We call on all parties to immediately cease hostilities to avoid further escalation.”

Thus, the stability of the Strait of Hormuz remains a central concern for the international community, and China’s next moves could significantly shape U.S.-China relations. With global reliance on energy resources at stake, how major powers interact in this region may have far-reaching consequences for economic and political stability worldwide.
