By 2050, summer in Ukraine will last for half a year: consequences for the climate and people

According to climatologist Svitlana Krakovska, by 2050 the duration of summer in Ukraine could increase to 150-180 days. This could seriously worsen living conditions and lead to severe droughts.

How the duration of summer will increase

According to Krakovska, an atlas of climate change scenarios was created on behalf of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center. This atlas predicts that by 2050 the duration of summer may increase to 150-180 days, which corresponds to 5-6 months a year.

'Such a scenario depends on how a person conducts their economic activities, what energy sources they will use, and how much greenhouse gas they will emit,' emphasized the climatologist.

Average daily temperatures of 28-30 °C will become the norm for summer in the southern regions. In Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions, the average summer temperature will be 24-26 °C. The coldest will be in the west, where +16...+18 °C is expected.

Krakovska also warns that within 25-30 years, a desert may appear in the Odessa region due to global warming. Southern areas of the region will turn into desert because of climate change.

The warnings of climatologist Svitlana Krakovska about the possible increase in the duration of summer to 150-180 days by 2050 and its consequences for Ukraine may require appropriate adaptation measures and risk management strategies for climate change.
