Ursula von der Leyen: Russia is not ready to end the war in Ukraine

According to ТСН: President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed concern about the 'unilateral division of a sovereign European state'. She stated that Russia has yet to show any readiness to end the conflict in Ukraine.

Speaking before European lawmakers in Strasbourg, von der Leyen noted:

“It must be clearly understood that there can be no unilateral division of a sovereign European state, and that borders cannot be changed by force. If today we legitimize and formalize the undermining of borders, we open the door to new wars tomorrow. We cannot allow this.”

She also welcomed the efforts of the US president towards a peaceful settlement, noting that they are a 'starting point'. However, von der Leyen expressed concern about the details of the 28-point plan proposed by Washington and Moscow.

Europe's position and challenges for Russia

Von der Leyen emphasized:

“As of today, there are no signs of Russia's genuine readiness to end the war.”
She added that pressure on Russia should continue to achieve real change.

Kaia Kallas, the head of European diplomacy, confirmed that EU foreign ministers have reiterated common principles, including sovereignty and Ukraine's right to self-defense. She noted:

“Right now, we do not see any signs that Russia is ready for a ceasefire”
and dared to change the situation to force Russia to negotiate.

Identifying threats and limitations

Kallas also noted that the idea of Ukraine possibly losing is 'absolutely wrong'. She emphasized that if Russia could seize Ukraine militarily, it would have done so by now. According to her, the Kremlin will try to achieve its goals through negotiations.

Regarding potential peace agreements, the diplomat stressed the importance of concessions from Russia to end its aggression. Von der Leyen also mentioned that limiting the Armed Forces of Ukraine would leave the state vulnerable to new attacks.

She confirmed that the European Commission plans to present a project that will allow the use of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine in 2026 and 2027. EU leaders plan to discuss this issue soon. Von der Leyen also stated that she does not see a scenario in which European taxpayers should pay reparations for Ukraine.

According to Reuters, the US plan consists of 28 points and is based on a Russian report submitted to the White House in October. High-ranking Kremlin officials noted that they are aware of the latest version of the American plan and have both positive aspects and those needing further discussion.

The Telegraph notes that the US's attempt to 'push through' a quick peace deal with Ukraine is doomed to failure. Donald Trump attempted to implement the deal 'by the force of personality' and a strict deadline, offering short theses that were supposed to lead to peace.

Thus, the position of the European Union remains clear: support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia must continue, as genuine readiness for peace from Moscow is still not apparent. Currently, key tasks for European leaders are to coordinate action strategies and ensure regional security, which is becoming increasingly urgent in light of the escalating conflict.
