Slowdown in Life Expectancy in Europe Due to Unhealthy Eating

A new study shows that the growth rate of life expectancy in Europe has decreased. The worst indicators were recorded in the United Kingdom. Scientists believe this is related to unhealthy and excessive eating. This was reported by 'Glavcom' referring to Euronews.

The growth of life expectancy in Europe has almost stopped due to overeating, high alcohol consumption, and low mobility. This is the conclusion of British scientists who published their results in 'The Lancet'.

Researchers note that the improvement in life expectancy, which lasted in Europe, halted after 2011. The study covered 20 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden, as well as England and Scotland.

The most significant delay in life expectancy after 2011 was observed in the United Kingdom and Germany. Norway, where a state-level policy to reduce sugar consumption is implemented, remains the only country where life expectancy continues to grow leading up to the pandemic.

Researchers also point out that these figures may indicate a change in the social composition of some societies. 'The demographic characteristics of the European population have significantly changed in some countries, such as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, due to increased migration from Northern European countries,' assures Tom Sanders, a professor of dietetics at King's College London.

The pandemic became a turning point in most countries where the study was conducted. It is noted that countries that maintained life expectancy growth until 2020 coped better with the coronavirus. This includes the Scandinavian countries, Iceland, and Belgium. Greece and the United Kingdom, on the other hand, showed the most serious decline, approximately seven months.

One of the main risk factors, according to Sanders, is nutrition. He calls on the government to address issues of unhealthy eating, add special labels to processed foods, and promote healthy and environmentally friendly options.

It should be noted that recently claims have appeared on the internet that the European Union was allowing dangerous food products based on insects into the market. This was made possible after the approval of products containing processed ultraviolet yellow mealworms.
