The French authorities reported that on December 25, 107 migrants were rescued while trying to cross the English Channel to get from France to Great Britain. During Christmas, 12 rescue operations were carried out, saving passengers from vessels that encountered problems near the city of Dunkirk. In total, at least 73 migrants have died this year attempting to cross the English Channel, making 2024 the deadliest year.
A large number of migrants also illegally cross the English Channel in small boats, reaching British shores. For example, on October 5, a record number of migrants were recorded crossing the channel - 973 individuals in 17 boats. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also reported that over 270,000 migrants were deported to 192 countries during the fiscal year. This figure is the highest since 2014.
