A 640-Year-Old French Castle Yields Remarkable Artifacts Preserved in Its Moat.
Discovery of the Château de l’Hermine
According to TSN.ua: Archaeologists in France have uncovered the 640-year-old Château de l’Hermine, a castle originally built in the 1380s by Duke John IV the Conqueror. The excavation took place beneath the inner courtyard of the Lagorce hotel in the city of Vannes. The structure is notably large, measuring 42 meters in length and 17 meters wide, and features a surrounding moat and a square tower, showcasing the architectural skill of the period. This discovery provides a rare window into the military and residential architecture of late medieval Brittany.
Significance of the Preserved Artifacts
A variety of artifacts were recovered from within the castle, exceptionally preserved by the waterlogged soil of the moat. Among the items found were:
- Jewelry
- Coins
- Padlocks
- Kitchenware
- Wooden barrel fragments
These finds offer valuable insights into the daily life and culture of the era. The damp environment prevented the decay of organic materials, making this a uniquely informative site for archaeological study. Such waterlogged conditions are rare and often lead to the best preservation of everyday objects from the Middle Ages.
Overall, the discovery of Château de l’Hermine is a significant addition to our understanding of medieval architecture and daily life. It underscores the critical role of archaeology in uncovering and preserving historical heritage. This find not only opens new avenues for research into France's medieval past but also has the potential to boost cultural tourism by drawing attention to the region's historical landmarks.
