Political Party Branch Leader Arrested in Kharkiv Region Over Timber Bribery Scheme.
Arrest of Political Party Leader in Timber Fraud Case
According to Novyny.live: A regional branch head of a political party in Kharkiv Oblast has been detained in connection with illegal timber dealings. Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) uncovered a large-scale corruption scheme where suspects allegedly demanded bribes from business owners. The arrests took place locally, with the masterminds—including the head of a regional office of the state enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' and the leader of a local party cell—acting for personal profit.
Bribery Scheme Details
According to investigators, the plot involved extorting 1.3 million hryvnias from an entrepreneur in exchange for 200 cubic meters of valuable timber species. The perpetrators' actions did not go unnoticed, and they have been formally charged under Article 191, Part 5, and Article 368, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. If convicted, they face up to 12 years in prison, along with asset forfeiture.
This case highlights persistent corruption challenges in Ukraine, particularly concerning natural resource management. Demanding bribes from businesses for timber access exemplifies the abuse of official positions, which harms both the entrepreneurial climate and the region's ecological balance. The Security Service of Ukraine continues its efforts to root out such corruption, focusing on exposing and punishing those responsible.
