Reviving Waterborne Transit in Kyiv

According to Novyny.live: A petition calling for the restoration of river transport on the Dnipro has been launched on Kyiv’s city council website. The initiative, spearheaded by Ruslan Dzhansurkaev, proposes using boats to carry passengers, which could help ease congestion on the city’s road bridges. So far, the petition has gathered more than two thousand signatures, but it needs to reach six thousand before officials are required to review it.

Arguments for Bringing Back Water Routes

The case for reintroducing water routes in the capital is compelling. Regular boat services in Kyiv began carrying passengers as early as 1961, but all scheduled water transport was shut down in 1992 and has never been revived. Attempts to relaunch river trams were made in 2009 and 2017, but neither effort succeeded.

The future of this petition at the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) remains uncertain. However, the growing public interest in restoring river transit could signal a shift. Adding water routes would be a meaningful step toward improving the capital’s transportation infrastructure.

Restoring river transport in Kyiv could significantly ease the traffic challenges the city faces, especially during peak hours. Given the historical use of river routes, Dzhansurkaev’s initiative may find support among residents looking for alternative ways to get around. There is also an environmental benefit: greater use of water transport could help reduce air pollution caused by car traffic.
