Kyiv wants to increase the number of shelters - details.
At the beginning of July 2025, there were over 4,300 shelters in Kyiv, for which 1.1 billion hryvnias were allocated this year for major repairs. This was stated by the city's mayor Vitali Klitschko on the 'Kyiv24' program.
The situation with shelters in Kyiv
Klitschko reported that work is ongoing in the capital to improve the technical condition of shelters and their number. This year, 1.1 billion hryvnias were allocated for the repair of 376 simplest shelters and protective structures of socio-cultural institutions and utilities.
'I emphasize that the money is allocated by the city to district administrations. They determine the facilities and carry out arrangements, repairs, etc.', said the mayor.
The mayor also emphasized the necessity to increase the number of shelters in the city given the regular mass attacks from Russia. He noted that in such cases, it is important to use all possible spaces as bomb shelters, including underground parking lots.
Earlier, the head of the Kyiv Military Administration, Timur Tkachенко, criticized the city hall for the lack of protective facilities for Kyiv residents during alarms, despite the prolonged war. Instances were also revealed in Ukraine where people were not allowed into shelters.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, stressed the importance of improving the technical condition of shelters in the city and increasing their number in the face of attack threats. He clarified that significant funds had already been allocated this year for the repair and maintenance of shelters, which is an important step in ensuring the safety of city residents in emergency situations.
