Language Law Violations in Schools Trigger Fines for Educators

According to Espreso.tv: State monitoring of the use of the official language in educational settings has led to penalties for teaching staff. The inspections were carried out by Ihor Spiridonov, a representative of the Language Ombudsman. They were prompted by a citizen complaint that included audio recordings documenting the infractions.

The violations were found to breach Article 21, Part 1 of Ukraine’s Law 'On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language.' The administrative fine amounts to 3,400 Ukrainian hryvnias. This case is not the first language law violation recorded in Kyiv’s educational institutions during the 2025/2026 academic year.

“The violations were confirmed through official state oversight,” said Olena Ivanovska.

Calls for Stricter Oversight Grow Louder

Ihor Spiridonov also noted: “This is far from the first time language law breaches have been documented.” The latest findings highlight an urgent need to tighten supervision of language compliance in schools, ensuring that Ukrainian maintains its proper role in the academic environment.

This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to language regulations in Ukraine, particularly within the education sector, where the use of Ukrainian should be a top priority. Given the recurring nature of these violations, authorities must strengthen enforcement mechanisms to ensure the law is properly implemented—a move that could positively shape the country’s linguistic landscape.
