Unusual Atmospheric Event Spotted in Lithuania

According to Espreso.tv: A rare atmospheric phenomenon known as a sprite was recorded in Lithuania during a powerful thunderstorm. The event was captured by Tadas Janušonis, a member of the SkyChasersLT group. This electrical discharge appeared over Lithuanian territory when a lightning strike triggered the sprite roughly 130 kilometers from the town of Pabradė.

Observing Sprites in the Sky

Sprites are high-altitude electrical discharges that form above active storm clouds. They are not common and are typically difficult to observe. Tadas Janušonis shared his experience:

“I was just watching a real lightning disco and decided to enjoy the show. Then suddenly a sprite flashed! This is the best sprite composition I have ever managed to capture.” — Tadas Janušonis

This sighting highlights the rarity and uniqueness of such atmospheric events, which draw attention not only from scientists but also from nature enthusiasts. Observing sprites can be important for understanding the electrical processes occurring in the upper layers of the atmosphere.

As rare atmospheric phenomena, sprites provide an opportunity to deepen knowledge about electrical discharges in the atmosphere and their impact on climatic processes. Given that such events are observed very infrequently, cases like this can serve as a foundation for further research in this field, while also boosting public interest in meteorology.
