In the Black Sea near Odesa, invasive blue crabs are being observed. Although this species is not yet a threat to the local ecosystem, its survival there is quite low, and competition with other crabs is strong. According to an official report from the State Agency for Melioration and Fisheries of Ukraine, more than 30 individuals of this species have been registered so far, some of them in the waters of Ukraine.Scientists have found that the blue crab, which was previously found with a female carrying millions of eggs, has a complex developmental cycle that is quite challenging in the Black Sea due to its less salty water. Local crab species significantly limit the newcomer's chances of survival due to intense competition.Researchers have discovered genetic links between Ukrainian crabs and their relatives from Italy and the USA, which helps scientists trace the pathways and sources of this species' entry into the bodies of water in our country. Although the blue crab has commercial potential, its widespread dissemination with significant industrial harvesting is currently unlikely. Nevertheless, the development of events in the future is not excluded, as it has been with other species. Thus, the situation remains under control and in the research focus.
