The CDU in Germany Reveals Position on Deployment of Peacekeepers in Ukraine.
Germany, the largest economy in the EU, plans to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine after the end of the war. This was stated by the security spokesman of the opposition party CDU, Roderich Kiesewetter, in an interview with Schwäbische Zeitung.
Kiesewetter called on Germany to prepare for a significant contribution to peacekeeping and the European security architecture. He emphasized the need to deploy German troops 'at the right Time with well-equipped forces.'
The CDU representative noted that the deployment of peacekeepers should take place within the framework of joint actions by the EU and NATO. 'Peacekeeping forces are effective and realistic if they are integrated into the European and transatlantic security architecture,' Kiesewetter stated.
According to a survey by the Yougov institute, 54% of Germans support the deployment of international peacekeeping forces in Ukraine after a ceasefire. However, only 23% support the involvement of German troops, while 33% are against it.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the placement of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine was discussed at the December meetings in Brussels as a protective measure against a possible attack from Russia. He also noted the 'positive outlook' of some leaders.
