The Constitutional Court of Romania demands a recount of the votes from the first round of the presidential elections
The Central Electoral Commission is required to recount the votes received during the first round of the presidential elections according to the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania. The pro-Russian candidate Cristian Terhes contested the voting results, claiming that Elena Lascu received votes transferred to her by another candidate who dropped out of the race but still appeared on the ballots.
By law, the result of the first round must be confirmed by November 29 to conduct the second round on December 8. However, the recount of 9.46 million votes will take several days due to the filed lawsuits.
The Supreme Council of Romania's Defense claims cyberattacks on the electoral process
The Supreme Council of Romania's Defense, the country's security body, has reported countering cyberattacks on the electoral process. The Council claims that presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has benefited through the platform TikTok, which did not identify him as a political candidate.
The statement from the Supreme Council of Defense indicates that Romania has become a target of 'hostile actions from state and non-state actors, particularly the Russian Federation'.
A TikTok representative denies such claims and asserts that Georgescu did not receive any advantages from the platform. The company removed the video at the request of the Romanian authorities within 24 hours.
Calin Georgescu received a significant number of votes in the first round of the elections
Calin Georgescu, an independent far-right politician, garnered 22.9% of the votes in the first round of the presidential elections. His success was a surprise to society, particularly for a country that is a member of the EU and NATO. He sparked outrage with his positions, in which he referred to Romanian fascist politicians as national heroes, criticized NATO and Romania for their policies towards Ukraine, and stated that the country should cooperate with Russia.
