Canine Distemper Virus Kills 72 Tigers at Thai Tourist Attractions.
Thai Authorities Investigate Tiger Deaths
According to TSN.ua: Thai officials have launched an investigation into the deaths of 72 tigers at two tourist facilities in Chiang Mai province. The fatalities occurred between February 8 and 19 at the Mae Taeng Tiger Kingdom and the Mae Rim Tiger Kingdom. Preliminary findings point to canine distemper virus (CDV) as the cause. This outbreak highlights the risks of disease transmission in facilities where captive wildlife and tourists interact closely.
The mass die-off within such a short timeframe has alarmed both environmental groups and local authorities. Both parks are now closed for a two-week disinfection process to prevent further viral spread. All staff and veterinarians who had contact with the tigers are under a mandatory 21-day medical observation.
Kritsasiam Kongsatri, a government representative, stated: 'We have identified and marked each burial site to prevent any parts of the deceased tigers from entering the illegal wildlife trade.'
These actions underscore the severity of the situation and the government's intent to protect animals from further threats. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities planning additional measures to ensure the safety of both wildlife and visitors to these tourist sites. Determining the precise cause of the tigers' deaths is crucial to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
Wildlife and Ecosystem Security
This incident draws attention not only to wildlife conservation issues but also to the biosecurity threats that can arise from close human-animal contact in tourism zones. Such outbreaks can have serious consequences for local ecosystems and public health. In its subsequent actions, the Thai government must consider not only local but also international wildlife protection standards.
