Massive Drone Strike Hits Russia’s Largest Oil Refinery and Plunges Crimea into Darkness.
Strikes on the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery and Crimea’s Power Grid Trigger Widespread Disruption
According to Espreso.tv: A coordinated drone assault targeted both the Novoyaroslavl refinery—one of Russia’s top five, processing roughly 15 million tons of crude annually—and energy facilities in Crimea, causing severe fallout. Witnesses reported the sound of drones flying overhead in multiple Crimean cities around the same time the refinery came under attack.
Explosions rocked the Kerch area and the vicinity of the Simferopol Thermal Power Plant. The strikes left Crimea entirely without electricity. In Kerch, a fire broke out at an oil and gas terminal operated by the company 'TES,' located within the city’s maritime fishing port. Additionally, NASA’s FIRMS system detected fire hotspots near the 330 kV 'Simferopol' electrical substation.
“Due to the lack of voltage in the grid, trolleybuses will not run on the lines this morning.”
Mikhail Razvozhayev, Head of the Sevastopol Administration
These events highlight the severe consequences of strikes on critical infrastructure, which have directly disrupted daily life for residents across the region.
Infrastructure Attacks and Their Broader Impact
Targeting key facilities like oil refineries and power stations can have far-reaching effects beyond energy security, rippling into a region’s social and economic stability. The power outage has already crippled transportation and other essential services, underscoring how vulnerable modern infrastructure is to external threats. Such incidents also risk escalating political and economic tensions in the area, potentially deepening the ongoing conflict.
