According to the Institute for the Study of War, strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on rear logistics facilities in Russia will cause significantly greater operational pressure on Russian troops.

The report emphasizes that in the summer of 2022, Ukrainian troops attacked Russian ammunition depots with HIMARS rocket systems in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. This forced the Russian army to redistribute its arsenals, leading to reduced efficiency of their logistics.

ISW analysts do not rule out the possibility that strikes by the Armed Forces on Russian ammunition depots in Russian territory, similar to the attack in Toropets, could force the Russian military command to take similar measures to reorganize and disperse support and logistics systems to mitigate the effects of such strikes.

"The Russian military likely did not address vulnerabilities at many logistics facilities by creating shelters. Lifting restrictions on the use of Western systems and further developing Ukraine's own capabilities concerning long-range strikes, could allow the AFU to more effectively exploit such enemy vulnerabilities," the report says.

According to the Institute, strikes by the Ukrainian army on Russian ammunition and rocket depots could destroy a significant portion of the Russians' material reserves.

"Strikes by Ukrainian forces on facilities in Russia could impact offensive operations across the entire theater of operations. This will happen if the Defense Forces have the material base, capabilities, and authorization to conduct a large-scale campaign of strikes on logistics and support facilities in Russian territory," ISW analysts note.
