Ukrainian Cash Transport Staff Detained in Hungary

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed outrage over severe violations of its citizens' rights during their detention in Hungary. On March 5, 2026, seven employees of Ukraine's 'State Savings Bank' were detained in Budapest. They were transporting valuable cargo from Vienna to Ukraine under an international contract. The Hungarian Counter-Terrorism Center carried out the operation, deploying an armored personnel carrier and armed personnel.

These individuals, who held witness status, were kept in handcuffs for 28 hours. During this period, they reportedly endured physical and psychological pressure, and were denied medical assistance and consular protection. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that

"Hungarian law enforcement did everything possible to deprive the detained Ukrainians of any support"
.

Deportation and Ukraine's Response

On March 6, 2026, Hungarian authorities decided to deport the Ukrainians and imposed a 3-year ban on their entry into the Schengen Area. The Ukrainian side stated it would

"pursue justice by all available national and international legal means"
. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry is also demanding the return of the seized vehicle and the valuable cargo.

This incident has caused significant concern for the Ukrainian government, which is demanding an investigation into the events and the upholding of human rights in international relations. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Hungary, a NATO and EU member whose government has maintained closer ties with Russia than other European nations. This diplomatic strain could further impact relations between the two countries.

The case underscores the critical importance of adhering to human rights and ensuring proper legal protection for citizens in international affairs. It points to the necessity for dialogue between states to resolve such conflicts. By appealing to international bodies, Ukraine aims to prevent similar situations in the future and improve mechanisms for protecting its citizens abroad.
