Three-Year Sentence for Draft Evasion in Poltava Region.
Evading Military Conscription
According to Novyny.live: A resident of Hadiach has been convicted for failing to report for military duty. On July 2, 2024, a military medical commission declared the man fit for service and issued him a summons to appear at a Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center on July 15, which he ignored. This case highlights the legal consequences of avoiding mobilization in Ukraine, where conscription is mandatory for eligible men.
The accused admitted his guilt. In his defense, he stated he had been participating in the construction of fortifications and had voluntarily donated 70,000 hryvnias to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The court also noted he is the father of two minor children.
Court's Verdict
The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison. However, this punishment was commuted to a one-year probationary term. Despite the suspended sentence, the regional military commissariat emphasized that this does not grant a deferment from service, and the individual remains liable for military duty. This ruling underscores the strict legal stance on draft evasion during the ongoing conflict, where personal circumstances or contributions do not automatically exempt citizens from their obligations.
