Ukraine-France Air Defense Partnership

According to UATV: Ukraine is deepening its collaboration with France to strengthen its air defense capabilities, focusing on the acquisition of radar systems and Aster-30 missiles. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov discussed these efforts with French Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Catherine Vautrin. A key objective of the talks is to finalize the purchase of radar systems using a European Union credit facility by the end of 2023. This partnership comes as Ukraine urgently works to shield its cities and infrastructure from ongoing aerial threats.

The Aster-30 missile is a top priority for upgrading Ukraine’s air defense network. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense,

“The parties discussed support for the purchase of radars through a European Union loan by the end of this year.”
The discussions also covered the potential delivery of SAMP/T NG systems and the domestic production of drones, both of which could significantly boost the effectiveness of Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defenses.

Strategic Talks with France

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron to address strategic cooperation matters. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense emphasized that

“Ukraine is ready, together with France, to launch the relevant processes for radars and Aster-30 missiles to provide additional protection for Ukrainian cities this year, before the start of winter.”

This collaboration between Ukraine and France highlights Ukraine’s active efforts to bolster its defense capabilities amid current security challenges. Leveraging French technology, including radar systems and Aster-30 missiles, could substantially enhance the protection of Ukraine’s airspace, a critical need given the regional security situation. The push to deploy new air defense systems before the winter of 2023 underscores the urgency and strategic planning behind Ukraine’s response to external threats.
