Development of an unmanned surface vessel in Ukraine

According to inkorr.com: Ukraine has created an unmanned surface vessel capable of transporting several fiber optic drones in retractable compartments on its hull. This was reported by Forbes.

According to the source, the shelling of the ports of Tuapse and Novorossiysk was the first incident where fiber optic drones were launched from the sea. Earlier, in December last year, the Ukrainian Navy demonstrated the launch of FPV drones from maritime drone carriers, indicating their possible use.

Experts note that due to a shortage of human resources, Ukraine is focusing on developing inexpensive unmanned systems for effective one-time use. As Gregory Falco from Cornell University noted, this approach could prove to be very effective.

Forbes emphasizes that both Ukraine and Russia are trying to increase the range of their drones, and maritime drone carriers open new opportunities for this. According to defense analyst Roy Gardiner, fiber optic FPV drones transported by sea carriers can strike both ground and marine targets, reducing the effectiveness of electronic warfare means. He believes that this innovation could change the dynamics of combat in the Black Sea, particularly considering the ability to strike distant targets such as Tuapse and Novorossiysk.

Samuel Bendett from the Center for a New American Security noted that Ukraine has already become a leader in creating various types of drones for specific tasks, and the experience gained is unparalleled even among leading economies and industries of the world.

Fiber optic drones receive commands and transmit images via fiber optic cable, replacing radio channels, which is especially important given the active use of electronic warfare means.

The development of unmanned vessels in Ukraine opens up new possibilities for the use of drones in military actions. This vessel could become an important asset for controlling the Black Sea and help Ukraine defend its borders more effectively, especially amidst rising tensions in the region.
