Could Ukraine’s Homegrown Ballistic Missiles Force Russia to the Negotiating Table?.
Ukraine’s Strategy in the War Against Russia
According to UATV: Kyiv is exploring the development of its own ballistic missiles as a means to shift the momentum in the war with Russia, with the ultimate goal of compelling Moscow into peace talks. This initiative could mark a pivotal turning point in the strategic standoff between the two nations, especially given that Ukraine has already ramped up its strikes on Russian territory by more than twelvefold.
Ukraine’s Current Ballistic Missile Arsenal
Ukraine currently has two ballistic missile systems in its inventory:
- The FP-7.X, with an approximate range of 200 kilometers;
- The FP-9, capable of striking targets up to 850 kilometers away.
Notably, the FP-7.X is undergoing flight testing, signaling a buildup of Ukraine’s military capabilities in this domain.
“Russia has ballistic missiles. They use them to strike Ukrainian civilian cities. Right now, we are able to intercept up to 10% of such missiles.”
Valeriy Borovyk, military expert
This highlights the urgent need to enhance air defense systems and improve strike efficiency.
“This is a huge advantage because it will trigger a major leap forward in pushing Russia toward negotiations and ending the war.”
Valeriy Borovyk, military expert
Borovyk believes that advancing ballistic missile technology could become a decisive factor in talks with Russia. However, he added that to use these missiles effectively, Ukraine must first “collect sufficient data” to analyze their performance.
In short, developing indigenous ballistic missiles could significantly alter the regional military balance and spur renewed momentum for peace negotiations, as Ukraine continues to fortify its defensive capabilities. This progress reflects Kyiv’s growing military ambitions and underscores the need to adapt to modern threats posed by Russia.
