Ukraine and Romania Forge Pact to Jointly Manufacture Drones.
Drone Co-Production Agreement Signed
According to UATV: During a state visit to Romania on March 12, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Romanian counterpart, President Klaus Iohannis, formalized an agreement for the joint production of drones. This significant development was accompanied by the signing of a strategic partnership declaration, marking a substantial deepening of bilateral ties between the two nations. This cooperation comes as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia's full-scale invasion, which began in 2022.
The signing ceremony took place at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, where the two leaders discussed several strategic initiatives. Among the key projects outlined was the construction of two electrical interconnectors, with one potentially operational by the end of 2026. These energy infrastructure projects are designed to enhance collaboration in a sector of critical importance for regional stability.
“Co-production is possible on Romanian territory. We are formalizing this; it is an important partnership for us.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
President Zelenskyy also highlighted the ongoing threats in the region, stating that 'Russia certainly does not want peace in Europe, and this aggressor invests heavily in destabilizing countries.' This remark underscores the timeliness of the enhanced cooperation between Ukraine and Romania, situated on NATO's eastern flank.
A Shared Commitment to Cooperation
The newly signed agreements symbolize more than just stronger bilateral relations; they represent a mutual commitment to collaborative work in the fields of security and energy amidst contemporary geopolitical challenges. The drone co-production pact and strategic partnership demonstrate a clear intent to bolster military and energy sector collaboration, which could prove vital for enhancing the defensive capabilities and stability of both states in response to external threats.
