Sweden and Ukraine Sign Deal for 16 Gripen E Jets: Delivery Timeline Revealed.
Gripen E Fighter Jet Procurement Agreement
According to Novyny.live: On June 30, Ukraine and Sweden finalized a contract for the purchase of 16 Gripen E fighter aircraft. This deal marks a significant milestone in strengthening Ukraine's combat aviation capabilities, especially given Sweden's ongoing support since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has reaffirmed his country's commitment to helping Ukraine bolster its defense capacity.
Under the terms of the agreement, the first batch of Gripen jets is scheduled for delivery in late May 2026. The earlier-model Gripen C/D variants, which were part of previous arrangements, are expected to arrive in early 2027. The initial fighters will be equipped with Meteor missiles, substantially enhancing their combat effectiveness.
The total value of military assistance tied to these procurements amounts to 128 billion Swedish kronor. A key component of the deal also involves training for Ukrainian pilots and technical crews, who are already familiarizing themselves with the C/D variant aircraft.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy: 'I thank Sweden—its entire people and government—for their meaningful partnership and unwavering support since the start of Russia's invasion.'
He added: 'Together with Sweden, we continue to strengthen Ukraine's combat aviation.'
This agreement is part of a broader collaboration strategy that includes a Drone Deal initiative and work on anti-ballistic missile systems. Defense cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden continues to deepen, reflecting growing backing from international partners in ensuring Ukraine's security.
The Significance of International Military Cooperation
The Gripen E procurement deal underscores the critical role of international military collaboration amid escalating threats to Ukraine's security. Signing this agreement could prove pivotal in modernizing Ukraine's armed forces and enhancing their defensive capabilities. Given the operational characteristics of Gripen fighters, this development may also shape the region's aerial combat strategy.
