Ukraine to Provide Free Meals for All Schoolchildren Starting September 1: What This Means.
Meeting with Heads of Regional Military Administrations
According to Novyny.live: On May 26, Yulia Svyrydenko convened a meeting with leaders of regional military administrations to discuss government priorities. A key topic was the launch of free meals for students in grades 1 through 11, set to begin on September 1. This initiative aims to ensure that children across Ukraine receive hot lunches, which Svyrydenko described as a vital step in advancing social programs.
“Starting September 1, students in grades 1 through 11 across Ukraine must receive hot meals,” said Yulia Svyrydenko.
Key Discussion Points
The meeting also covered several critical areas, including:
- defense
- energy
- preparations for the upcoming heating season
A major focus was on how ready different regions are for the next phase of school meal reforms. The Cabinet of Ministers has already allocated 1 billion hryvnias to upgrade 73 school kitchen facilities, aiming to boost food quality.
Additionally, a draft law (No. 15105) has been registered that would require students to refrain from using phones during lessons. This measure could help improve the learning environment. In February, the Verkhovna Rada also backed a bill on remuneration for staff at out-of-school educational institutions, further highlighting the emphasis on education and support for teachers.
“School meals are not just about social support—they’re also about boosting local economies, creating jobs, and backing Ukrainian producers,” said Yulia Svyrydenko.
Rolling out free meals for all students in grades 1 through 11 could significantly enhance learning conditions and assist families in need. The additional investments in modernizing school kitchens also signal the government’s commitment to raising nutritional standards. These efforts matter not only for education but also for strengthening local economies and supporting domestic manufacturers.
