Over 700 Drones Strike Ukraine; Zelenskyy Calls It Russia’s Reply to Ceasefire Offer.
Drone Assault and Ukraine’s Response
According to UATV: On April 1, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched more than 700 drones across Ukraine, with a large portion being Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles. The Kremlin’s attack came as a direct response to Ukraine’s proposal for an Easter ceasefire. According to the president, Ukrainian defenders are working around the clock to intercept these drones, successfully destroying nearly 90% of them.
The strikes hit multiple regions of Ukraine, including:
- Volyn
- Zakarpattia
- Ternopil
- Chernivtsi
- Cherkasy
- Ivano-Frankivsk
Zelenskyy emphasized that these actions represent Moscow’s reply to Ukraine’s peace initiative, stating:
'In essence, this is the Russians’ answer to our proposal for a ceasefire during the Easter holidays' — Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The president added, 'We need other signals, and silence at Easter could be exactly the signal that shows everyone: diplomacy can succeed.'
Ukraine’s Diplomatic Efforts
Zelenskyy discussed security matters with international partners, including the U.S. team, noting that 'we agreed to strengthen security guarantees.' These talks involved cooperation with countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Jordan, and Turkey. The president highlighted that 'this is what will give Ukraine confidence.'
Zelenskyy also held conversations with the prime ministers of Norway and the United Kingdom, remarking:
'Today I spoke with the Prime Minister of Norway. Thank you, Jonas! A good conversation' — Volodymyr Zelenskyy
and 'Today there was a conversation with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom — we are preparing new strong steps.' These contacts underscore Ukraine’s active diplomatic engagement amid the conflict’s escalation.
This comes as a reminder that 1,498 days have passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. During this challenging period, Ukraine continues to fight for its independence and security, receiving support from international allies.
The drone attack highlights Russia’s ongoing aggressive policies, despite Ukraine’s calls for a peaceful resolution. At the same time, Ukraine’s vigorous diplomatic outreach and the strengthening of international alliances may prove crucial in the fight for regional security and stability. These events underscore the vital importance of global support for Ukraine as it faces sustained military aggression.
