Ukraine to Boost Gas Imports from Poland Starting February 2026.
Ukraine and Poland Forge Stronger Energy Ties
According to UATV: Ukraine is strengthening its energy resilience through enhanced cooperation with Poland. On January 27, 2026, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced a crucial agreement for Poland to increase its natural gas deliveries to Ukraine starting in early February 2026. The gas transmission system operators of both nations have agreed to a phased ramp-up of these imports.
Significant Increase in Gas Supply Volumes
Under the new arrangement, daily gas import capacity from Poland will rise from 15.3 million cubic meters to 18.4 million cubic meters by the end of April 2026. This expansion is a vital step for Ukraine's energy security. In 2025, over 2 billion cubic meters of gas—more than 30% of Ukraine's total gas imports—were sourced via Poland. This move is particularly significant as Ukraine seeks to diversify its energy supplies and reduce dependence on other sources amidst regional instability.
Looking ahead, new EU regulations set to take effect in 7 will require verification of the country of origin for natural gas prior to import. While these rules could potentially impact future energy relations, both Ukraine and Poland are currently focused on deepening their gas supply partnership. The increased imports from Poland represent a strategic priority for Ukraine, providing greater stability. However, the upcoming EU regulations may necessitate adaptations to Ukraine's energy security strategy, highlighting the need for close cooperation with partners and proactive planning for future challenges.
