Ukraine’s Interceptor Drones Take Down Up to 30% of Iranian-Made Shaheds, Says Defense Advisor Sternenko.
Ukraine’s Air Defense Efficiency on the Rise
According to Novyny.live: On March 15, Serhiy Sternenko, an advisor to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, reported a significant improvement in the country’s air defense capabilities. According to him, Ukrainian interceptor drones are now capable of destroying up to 30% of Russian-operated Shahed drones, with some regions seeing success rates exceeding 50%. Sternenko noted that
“the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense in countering drones has increased thanks to more efficient use of our available forces and resources.”This progress comes as Ukraine continues to face relentless aerial attacks from Russian forces.
However, he emphasized that no air defense system in the world can achieve 100% effectiveness. The improved performance is attributed to better organization of air defense operations and advancements in interceptor drone technology. Sternenko also suggested that the threat posed by Shahed drones may diminish compared to 2025, signaling further enhancements to Ukraine’s defense systems.
Challenges and New Technologies
A key challenge remains the adaptation of Russian drones, which are becoming faster and more maneuverable. The enemy is testing new models, including the hybrid ‘Geran-5’ drone-missile. In response, Ukraine has already received some Patriot air defense missiles under the Ramstein agreements. These new supplies are expected to significantly bolster Ukraine’s ability to counter modern threats.
Pavlo Yelizarov has also been brought in to help improve the short-range air defense system, reflecting active efforts by Ukrainian military forces to ensure reliable protection against aerial threats. Given these developments, it is clear that Ukraine’s air defense continues to evolve, adapting to new challenges posed by the adversary.
The growing effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense marks a crucial step in the ongoing war with Russia, where aerial threats remain a major concern. Advances in technology and defense organization are helping Ukraine reduce losses from enemy attacks, but they also require constant updates and adaptation to emerging threats. Deliveries of modern air defense systems like the Patriot could prove pivotal in securing the country’s future safety, especially as aggression from the adversary intensifies.
