Ukrainian Forces Shrink the Gray Zone in Zaporizhzhia as Russian Positions Erode.
Ukrainian Defense Forces Launch Counter-Attacks
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian defense units are conducting counter-attacking operations in the Zaporizhzhia region, reducing the contested 'gray zone' and causing Russian Federation occupation forces to lose control over previously held territory. Military expert Vladyslav Selezniov emphasized that Russian troops are adhering to a tactic of applying pressure on the weakest sections of Ukrainian defense.
The Situation on the Zaporizhzhia Front
Active offensive operations by Russian forces have been ongoing since mid-October 2023. According to Serhii Bratchuk, the Huliaipole direction, like the entire Zaporizhzhia front, remains a priority for Russian forces. However, the counter-attacks by Ukrainian soldiers have disrupted the Russian army's plans to establish a bridgehead for a Zaporizhzhia-Orikhiv operation.
Serhii Bratchuk also noted that the gray zone, which was previously significant on this section of the front, has now, in some tactical positions, come under the control of Ukrainian Defense Forces.
- According to the DeepState project, in January 2026, the Russian Federation occupied 245 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory.
- This underscores the importance of the current Ukrainian counter-attacks in regaining control of lost territories.
The situation on the Zaporizhzhia front remains tense, and the active operations of Ukrainian forces could significantly impact the future dynamics of the conflict. The loss of control by Russian troops may indicate a shift in the strategic situation in the region, which could, in turn, open new opportunities for the Ukrainian defense. As both sides continue to vie for tactical advantage, monitoring developments is crucial, given the potential for serious consequences for the overall situation in Ukraine. The Zaporizhzhia region has been a critical southern axis since the early stages of Russia's full-scale invasion.
