ISW explained what Russia aims to achieve with the new 'Oreshnik' attack on Ukraine.

"Oreshnik" attack on Ukraine

The Institute for the Study of War reports that Russia may again target Ukraine with the medium-range ballistic missile 'Oreshnik'. This is part of the Russian campaign aimed at forcing the West and Ukraine to abandon military assistance to Kyiv.

The Institute also believes that missile strikes with the 'Oreshnik' on Ukraine and Russia's negative rhetoric are part of a strategy to coerce the West and Ukraine into enhancing deterrence.

Initially, the Russian General Staff stated: 'The launch of the 'Oreshnik' missile was planned long before the U.S. allowed Ukraine to attack military targets on Russian territory.'

If Russian forces use the 'Oreshnik' missile again, similar narratives may be employed against the Russians.
