Odessa Police Uncover $2 Million Land Grab Scam Involving Notary.
Police Operation in Odessa
According to Novyny.live: Police in Odessa have disrupted a major land fraud scheme, preventing the theft of plots valued at over 75 million Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $2 million USD). The operation targeted three individuals, including a private notary, who are accused of orchestrating the two-year-long scam. The group, led by a 55-year-old Odessa resident and two 48-year-old female accomplices, attempted to illegally seize the high-value properties.
Investigators found that the conspirators successfully misappropriated five land parcels during their operation. Following the probe, law enforcement has served notices of suspicion to seven members of the group under four articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code. Those convicted could face up to 12 years in prison. The court may also impose asset confiscation and a ban on holding certain public offices for up to three years.
The Critical Fight Against Corruption
This case underscores the ongoing battle against corruption within Ukraine's land sector, where such schemes inflict substantial financial damage on the state and its citizens. Police are continuing their investigation to uncover all details and ensure every person involved is held accountable.
Ensuring punishment for such crimes is vital, as it sends a clear message to other potential offenders that land fraud will not be tolerated. This high-profile investigation could also serve as a catalyst for further reforms to Ukraine's land legislation, which has been a focus since the market opened in recent years.
