According to Novyny.live: Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into a case of severe mistreatment at the Odesa pretrial detention center. According to available information, a 45-year-old male inmate subjected his cellmate—a newly arrived 50-year-old detainee—to repeated beatings and humiliation. The suspect recorded his actions on video, suggesting the abuse was systematic. Investigators report that the mistreatment began in late May 2023.
The suspect was already in custody on suspicion of robbery. Prosecutors have charged him with torture, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of up to six years in prison. In a related development, nine individuals have been arrested on suspicion of torture and illegal detention of men. Those detained include:
- six officials from a territorial recruitment center;
- three members of a non-governmental organization.
