Ukraine Plans a National Pantheon and a New Order of Europe Award.
Bills on State Honors and the Ukrainian National Pantheon Officially Registered
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s parliament has officially registered two legislative proposals aimed at reshaping how the country honors its most distinguished figures. Bill No. 15359, which amends Article 7 of the Law on State Awards, introduces a new Order of Europe to expand the existing system of national honors. The second bill, No. 15360, establishes the legal framework for a Ukrainian National Pantheon, setting rules for commemorating outstanding citizens.
According to the Pantheon bill, a person may be honored in the Pantheon only after a waiting period of 20 to 25 years following their death. Oleksandr Alfyorov, commenting on the initiative, explained that
“the Ukrainian Pantheon will have two components: actual reburial and cenotaphs.”He stressed that
“no one will move their graves to the Pantheon,”underscoring a commitment to respecting existing burial sites of notable individuals.
The Pantheon’s Role in Strengthening National Identity
The Pantheon is designed to span “chronological boundaries of honoring our ancestors over more than a thousand years,” as the bill’s authors put it, ensuring the lasting memory of Ukrainians who made significant contributions to the nation’s development. These legislative moves could become pivotal in shaping national identity and properly recognizing state figures within Ukraine.
The registration of these bills reflects the Ukrainian government’s drive to systematize and improve how it honors outstanding personalities—a key element in strengthening national consciousness. Establishing a national pantheon and new awards may also act as a catalyst for cultural policy development and elevate the social importance of historical memory. These steps could influence how modern Ukraine is perceived in light of its history and cultural heritage.
