Cabbage has sharply risen in price by 25% in a week: Experts named the reasons.
According to ТСН: This week, prices for white cabbage have noticeably increased in Ukraine. Producers raised prices due to changes in supply volumes and depletion of stocks in storage.
According to the monitoring of the analytical project EastFruit, by the end of December, most farmers had already sold a significant part of their products. In addition, there is a shortage of medium and low-grade cabbage on the market, which is currently practically absent from sale.
Why prices have gone up
Experts highlight several key factors that have influenced the current market situation:
Reduction of production stocks: The decrease in the quantity of products in farms forced farmers to change their trading strategies.
Holding back sales: Producers with high-quality vegetables are not in a hurry to sell, waiting for more favorable conditions.
Position of wholesalers: Representatives of wholesale companies report shortages and note that the quantity of cabbage on the market has significantly decreased compared to previous periods.
Today, prices for white cabbage in farms range from 3 to 10 UAH/kg ($0.07–0.23/kg), indicating a rise of 25% in just one week.
Despite this increase, prices still look favorable for consumers compared to last year - cabbage costs on average 82% cheaper than during the same period in 2022.
Most market participants believe that the trend towards rising prices will continue, and the rate of price growth may accelerate. The main reason for this will be further depletion of vegetable stocks in professional storage facilities of Ukrainian farmers.
We've previously reported on what the prices for borscht vegetables will be until February 2026.In this context, it is important to understand that changes in prices for white cabbage reflect not only seasonal fluctuations but also the overall situation in Ukraine's agricultural market. Price increases may affect internal market mechanisms and consumer habits, which, in turn, emphasizes the relevance of food security issues and ensuring supply stability. In case of further price increases, consumers should be prepared for changes in the cost of not only cabbage but also other vegetables that are part of the daily diet.
