Power Outages in Ukraine Disrupt Cash Access: What to Do When an ATM Fails.
Cash Access Challenges in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Widespread power outages across Ukraine are severely disrupting citizens' ability to withdraw cash from ATMs. The situation becomes particularly stressful when funds are debited from an account but not dispensed by the machine. For instance, a PrivatBank client attempting to withdraw money from another bank's ATM during a blackout reported that their funds were deducted but remained inside the device. According to the information received, the refund process for this client's money could take up to 120 days. These infrastructure challenges are a direct consequence of the ongoing war, which has targeted Ukraine's energy grid.
PrivatBank's Alternative Solutions
In response to these conditions, PrivatBank is offering its clients alternative services. The bank operates designated 'duty' branches equipped with generators and backup communication channels, providing a degree of operational stability. At these branches, services like money transfers and utility bill payments are available, which can be crucial for those unable to obtain cash from ATMs.
Furthermore, in cities without a PrivatBank duty branch, Ukrainians can use branches within the shared 'powerbanking' network of partner banks. In February, PrivatBank will also introduce special terms for international money transfers, which may assist clients during these difficult times. This move could prove vital for families relying on remittances from abroad.
The persistent electricity blackouts in Ukraine are significantly hindering public access to essential financial services, a problem acutely felt amidst the ongoing military conflict and economic instability. The establishment of duty branches with backup power sources is a critical step in maintaining financial accessibility for the population. The upcoming enhancements for international transfers may further help Ukrainians stay connected with relatives and friends overseas during this crisis.
