Far Caves Reopen at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

According to Espreso.tv: The Far Caves of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra have been reopened, marked by a prayer service led by His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine. This significant event restores public access to the caves starting August 15. Recognized as the birthplace of monastic life at the Lavra, the Far Caves also house the incorrupt remains of 51 saints, including Saint Fedir Ostrozkyi, a founding figure of the Ostrozkyi princely line.

History and Challenges

The complex of the Near and Far Caves at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra dates back to the 11th century, with underground corridors totaling 293 meters in length. The Varangian Caves were excavated before the arrival of monks and have become a vital part of Ukrainian monastic history and culture.

Against this backdrop, a large fire broke out at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on the night of June 15, causing significant damage, most notably to the Dormition Cathedral. Bishop Avraamiy reported the urgent evacuation of church relics due to the incident, stating:

“After the strike, an urgent evacuation of church relics began.” - Bishop Avraamiy

Thus, events at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra highlight both important achievements in restoring spiritual life and serious challenges tied to preserving cultural heritage amid modern threats. The reopening of the Far Caves can be seen as a symbol of revival and the restoration of traditions, even as recent tragedies like the fire raise questions about the protection and future security of historic monuments.
