Wounded in Action Medal for Ukrainian Soldiers: Does It Unlock Benefits?.
Honors Issued by Ukraine's Defense Ministry
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Ministry of Defense is authorized to award service medals to military personnel, including the 'Wounded in Action' medal. This decoration is intended for members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who sustained either minor or severe injuries during combat operations. The medal is conferred by order of the Minister of Defense, and eligibility extends to individuals who have been discharged into the reserves or retired, provided they were wounded while on active duty and have not previously received this honor.
Social Guarantees and Official Statuses
It is crucial to understand that receiving the 'Wounded in Action' medal does not automatically grant the status of 'combatant' (UDB). While the documentation required to apply for this status overlaps with what is needed for the medal, possessing the medal itself does not ensure access to benefits. Combatants are entitled to specific social guarantees, which include:
- A 75% discount for parents on housing and utility costs.
Individuals with disabilities resulting from war are eligible for full (100%) reimbursement of housing and utility expenses. These provisions reflect the state's efforts to support those harmed by combat. However, it is important to note that the 'Wounded in Action' medal does not open the door to all the benefits available to official combatants.
This information highlights the need for a clear distinction between different types of awards and official statuses granted to service members in Ukraine. Although the 'Wounded in Action' medal serves as a recognition of a soldier's courage and sacrifice, it does not replace the formal combatant status, which is the key that unlocks certain social benefits. This distinction can have significant implications for military personnel and their families when seeking post-service support.
