Why Bulgaria’s Acting Premier’s Trip to Kyiv Matters for Ukraine.
Andrey Gyurov Visits Kyiv
According to UATV: On March 30, Bulgaria’s acting Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov arrived in Kyiv for high-level meetings with Ukrainian officials, focusing on bilateral cooperation. His delegation includes several key ministers, underscoring the significance of the visit for both nations.
During his stay, Gyurov held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, and Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. A notable part of the agenda was a visit to a residential building destroyed by a Russian drone strike on July 31, 2022. That attack killed around 30 people, including five children.
Political Background
Gyurov’s interim government took office in February 2023, with Bulgaria’s next parliamentary elections scheduled for April 19, 2023—a vote that could reshape the country’s political landscape.
This visit highlights a renewed push for cooperation between Bulgaria and Ukraine, especially given the security challenges both countries face. The high-level meetings signal a mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, even as Bulgaria navigates a period of political uncertainty. The upcoming elections may significantly influence Sofia’s future stance on Ukraine and broader regional security issues.
