Volkswagen presents new crossover ID Era for China: debut in 2026

According to Korrespondent.net: Volkswagen has unveiled the serial version of the crossover ID. Era, which is the company's first model with a hybrid EREV powertrain developed in collaboration with SAIC specifically for the Chinese market, reports CarNewsChina. Ralph Brandstaetter, head of Volkswagen Group China, shared a photo of the camouflaged vehicle, confirming that the serial version retains most elements of the concept previously shown at the Shanghai auto show. The debut of the new model is scheduled for 2026, likely during the Beijing auto show.

Model Description and Features

The ID. Era crossover is designed for large families and can have three rows of seating in either a six- or seven-seat configuration. Externally, the vehicle features dual-level optics with slim daytime running lights and LED headlights, a massive hood, a flat roof, and the presence of a lidar. Noticeable are also the wide wheel arches, multi-spoke rims, roof rails, and active air intakes. Despite new safety requirements in China, Volkswagen has retained the pop-out door handles. Inside, details of which have not yet been revealed, there is a prominent large display and soft padding in the driver's headrest area.

Technical Specifications and Prospects

Although the specifications have not yet been announced, analysts believe that the ID. Era may receive a powertrain similar to the IM Motors system from SAIC. For instance, the IM LS6 crossover with a similar platform has an 800-volt architecture, a 66 kWh battery with a range of 450 km according to CLTC standards, and two electric motors with a combined output of 670 hp. If Volkswagen opts for a similar configuration, the ID. Era could provide a mixed range of over 1000 km.

Mass production of the model is set to begin in April 2026. However, the EREV segment in China has shown declining sales over the past five months, as consumers prefer conventional electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Analysts note that Volkswagen may be late in entering this segment, complicating competition for market share.

It was previously reported that the new Volkswagen electric sedan will be based on the Chinese car XPeng.

Volkswagen will start exporting its Chinese models abroad

The launch of the ID. Era is a significant step for Volkswagen in the Chinese market, where competition among electric vehicle manufacturers is increasing. The uncertainty in the EREV market may present challenges for the company, but given its engineering capabilities and experience, Volkswagen has every chance of becoming a successful player in the hybrid vehicle segment.
