EU Readiness, Not Just Reforms, Will Determine Ukraine's 2030 Membership Bid.
Ukraine's Path to European Union Membership
According to UATV: Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine is actively pursuing the ambitious goal of joining the European Union by 2030. According to political scientist Dr. Igor Petrenko, the country has already completed the technical groundwork for integration across most required areas. However, the speed of this process now hinges significantly on the European Union's own readiness to undertake internal reforms.
“Ukraine's goal of joining the EU by 2030 is entirely realistic.” - Igor Petrenko
Petrenko stressed that Ukraine is already an integral part of European Union security, serving as a key defensive element for the continent. He further noted that the EU's decision-making system requires revision. Specifically, he suggested that matters concerning Ukraine's security and accession could be decided by a qualified majority vote rather than requiring full consensus among all member states.
External challenges also threaten the integration process. Petrenko observed that the Russian Federation will leverage all available means to pressure EU politicians and complicate Ukraine's accession. Therefore, regardless of the pace of reforms implemented by Ukraine, the final decision on membership will also depend on the EU's internal political dynamics and its capacity for change. The accession process is a major geopolitical undertaking, testing the bloc's unity and strategic resolve.
The Significance of Integration
Ukraine's accession to the EU represents a crucial stage in the country's development, promising to strengthen economic and political ties with European states and significantly enhance continental security. Achieving this objective, however, will require concerted efforts from both Ukraine and the EU, all while navigating current geopolitical challenges, particularly from Russia, which is likely to resist the process.
