Discussion on Polish-Ukrainian Relations

According to Espreso.tv: Speaking at a press conference in Kleczew, Donald Tusk addressed the state of Polish-Ukrainian relations, including an appeal from former President Viktor Yushchenko. Tusk emphasized the need for action from Ukraine following a contentious new decision by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He stated,

“We are waiting for Ukraine to take the first step after this unfortunate decision by President Zelenskyy,”
adding that
“it is worth making that effort.”

Recent Developments in Bilateral Ties

Tensions between Poland and Ukraine have escalated in recent months. On May 26, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree naming a special operations unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Then, on June 8, 2023, a meeting of the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle took place, setting the stage for subsequent events. On June 19, 2023, Andrzej Nawrocki stripped Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, prompting the Ukrainian leader to respond by claiming that

“I see purely electoral motives in Nawrocki’s actions.”
Zelenskyy returned the award on June 20, reiterating his view of Nawrocki’s electoral motivations. Nawrocki’s office confirmed receipt of the order on June 22, and by June 26, Nawrocki’s approval rating had reached 54.8%.

Tusk also remarked,

“They are trying, but we would like to hear it more convincingly and clearly.”
Meanwhile, 90% of Ukrainians support a constructive resolution of historical disputes with Poland, indicating a mutual desire to find common ground and develop relations despite existing difficulties.

Polish-Ukrainian relations remain complex, and Tusk’s comments underscore the importance of dialogue between the two countries. Despite historical disagreements, the willingness of Ukrainians to resolve conflicts constructively highlights the potential for further cooperation. Mutual understanding and shared interests could serve as a foundation for stable relations in the future.
