Ukraine Urges U.S. Congress to Enshrine Russia Sanctions into Law.
Hopes for Tougher U.S. Action on Russia Sanctions
According to UATV: Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, has called on Washington to codify sanctions against Russia at the legislative level. Her remarks come as the U.S. Senate prepares new sanction initiatives targeting Moscow, raising optimism among Ukrainian officials.
What Kyiv Expects from Washington
Stefanishyna noted that Ukraine had hoped for stronger measures from the Biden administration. She stressed the importance of continued U.S. support in the face of Russian aggression, expressing confidence that a bill would pass both chambers of Congress:
“We anticipate that the Senate will adopt a law that also has the backing of the House of Representatives.” — Olha Stefanishyna
In a separate statement, Ukrainian representative Yuriy Vytrenko pointed to the intensification of Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine:
“The escalation of Russian terror against Ukraine’s civilian population shows the Kremlin’s growing desperation.” — Yuriy Vytrenko
These comments highlight Kyiv’s increasing demand for stronger international backing as Russia’s war continues. Locking in sanctions through U.S. law could serve as a key deterrent against further Kremlin aggression and help stabilize the region. The stance also underscores the pivotal role of American foreign policy in shaping the conflict’s trajectory and sustaining Ukraine’s position on the global stage.
