Ukraine to Establish Naval Academy and New Mine-Sweeping Brigade, President Announces.
New Naval Academy and Mine Countermeasure Brigade Announced
According to Espreso.tv: During a visit to the Odesa region on July 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled plans to create a Naval Academy and a new brigade focused on mine countermeasure vessels. Decree No. 583/2026 instructs the Cabinet of Ministers to establish the Naval Academy based on the Institute of Naval Forces of the National University 'Odesa Maritime Academy.' This move highlights Ukraine's commitment to strengthening its naval capabilities amid ongoing security challenges.
At the event, Zelenskyy honored 25 naval personnel with state awards. The decorations presented include:
- Cross of Military Merit
- Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, III degree
- Order 'For Courage' (II–III degrees)
- Medal 'For Military Service to Ukraine'
Recognized units include the 12th Assault Boat Brigade of the Navy Fleet, as well as the 65th and 68th separate coastal missile divisions of the 360th separate coastal missile brigade.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for naval development, stating:
'I know there is such a need among our Navy, there is the corresponding capability, and most importantly, there is the desire among our cadets and young people to serve and defend Ukraine.' - Volodymyr ZelenskyyHe also highlighted the Navy's achievements, noting that together with other defense and security forces, they accomplished what many considered impossible: 'The Ukrainian Navy, along with other components of the defense and security forces, did what many thought was impossible.'
Ukrainian Navy Day Celebrated
Since 2015, Ukrainian Navy Day has been observed on the first Sunday of July. In his address, Zelenskyy stressed the value of Ukrainian experience and expertise:
