Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Back on Backup Power: 20th Blackout Since War Began.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Status
According to Espreso.tv: The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has once again entered a 'survival power' mode after losing its connection to the external grid. This marks the 20th such incident since the start of the war. In response, the facility automatically switched to backup diesel generators to maintain electricity supply.
Currently, the only available external power line is the 330 kV 'Feroplavna-1'. Meanwhile, the 750 kV 'Dniprovska' main line has been disconnected for three months. The outage stems from issues within the plant’s internal power networks. Repair work is being carried out under local safety agreements involving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Power Restoration Efforts
On June 6, the IAEA reported that external power had been restored after a 15-hour blackout. Rafael Grossi, the IAEA’s Director General, commented:
'Each loss of external power is yet another reminder of how critical it is to reinforce the plant’s energy connections in order to minimize the risks of a nuclear accident.' Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General
The ongoing disruptions at the Zaporizhzhia plant raise serious concerns, as repeated power outages could lead to severe consequences. These incidents highlight the need for a stable energy infrastructure, especially during wartime. The international community, along with the IAEA, continues to monitor the situation closely, working to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities in the region.
