Ukrainian Councilor Detained for Allegedly Taking Bribes to Remove Men from Wanted List.
Kyiv Lawmaker Apprehended
According to Novyny.live: A member of the Pochaiv City Council was arrested in Kyiv on charges of abuse of influence. According to law enforcement, the councilor offered to use his position to have military-aged men removed from official wanted lists in exchange for cash, a serious criminal offense. His asking price for this service reportedly ranged from $4,000 to $10,000.
The arrest occurred on February 14. Authorities state the official was caught after receiving 77,000 hryvnias and while in the process of accepting an additional $10,000. His actions have been classified under Part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers abuse of influence.
Public Outcry and Broader Implications
The councilor is currently being held in pre-trial detention, with the option of posting bail. This case has provoked significant public anger and underscores the critical need to combat corruption within state institutions. A swift and impartial investigation is now anticipated.
This detention is part of a wider anti-corruption campaign in Ukraine, where graft remains a major national challenge. Such law enforcement actions are seen as vital for restoring public trust in government and highlighting the urgency of systemic reforms. Observers suggest that cases like this send a strong signal to other officials about the consequences of abusing their authority.
