Why Ukraine’s Green ATB Stores Disappeared: Chain Abandons Experimental Format.
The 'ATB-Express' Pilot Project
According to Novyny.live: In 2018, Ukraine saw the launch of a trial run for experimental 'ATB-Express' supermarkets, easily recognized by their green storefronts. These outlets were designed to give shoppers a new experience, featuring a wider product range and extra services. However, by 2026, the ATB company decided to keep only its black and blue-branded locations, dropping the 'convenience store' concept entirely.
During the experiment, three 'ATB-Express' stores opened in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro, with testing running through the end of 2018. These experimental supermarkets stood out not just for their green facades but also for their advanced technology. They were equipped with the latest refrigeration and freezing units, a new lighting system, improved insulation, and heating. Among the new features were dedicated sections such as:
- Freshly baked goods
- Fresh meat
- Draft beer
The selection of greens and salads was also upgraded, and a fresh juice machine was introduced.
A Focus on Refinement
Against this backdrop, ATB decided to phase out its 'convenience stores,' underscoring the company’s commitment to improving its existing store formats. Currently, only black and blue-branded locations remain in operation, marking the end of the green store experiment. This move shows how the company continues to adjust its strategy based on market demands and consumer preferences.
Abandoning the 'ATB-Express' format may signal a shift toward more traditional retail models, which likely proved more profitable or convenient for customers. This decision could also be a response to evolving consumer behavior, with shoppers possibly favoring more familiar store layouts. Such strategic changes might reshape competition in Ukraine’s retail sector, as other chains could follow ATB’s lead in seeking the best ways to meet customer needs.
