Zelenskyy Orders Defense Minister to Reduce Tensions with Military Recruitment Centers.
The New Defense Minister's Mandate
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given newly appointed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov a primary directive: to minimize conflicts with Territorial Recruitment Centers (TRCs). This order follows a recent, violent incident in Odesa where a man liable for military service stabbed a TRC official. Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the parliamentary committee on national security, defense, and intelligence, commented on the situation and outlined plans to encourage citizens to serve under contract.
Remarks from Fedir Venislavskyi
Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the 'Servant of the People' parliamentary faction, stated that a key objective is ensuring greater restraint from military personnel and TRC representatives. He noted that most TRC staff are war veterans, and their response to the provocations that often accompany these conflicts needs improvement.
“The key task is to ensure that the military, the TRC representatives, who are 90% war veterans, show greater restraint in their reaction to the provocations that often accompany such conflicts.” — Fedir Venislavskyi
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine plans to hold a broad discussion on contract service issues in February or March 2024. 'I think that in the short term, in February or March, we will bring this up for broad discussion, for communication, and for adoption in parliament,' Venislavskyi added.
Furthermore, he announced that military summonses may be delivered not only by TRC and social service workers but also by representatives of military administrations and heads of enterprises. This measure aims to increase the efficiency of the call-up process and reduce societal tension stemming from conflicts related to military conscription.
Amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, the organization of conscription and the interaction between TRCs and citizens is critically important. Incidents like the one in Odesa highlight the need for constructive dialogue and reduced societal strain. The planned parliamentary discussion on contract service indicates the government's attempts to refine the military mobilization system and adapt it to current challenges. The success of these initiatives could impact the overall situation in the country and foster better communication between the state and its citizens during wartime.
