Zelensky Outlines Steps to Reduce Belarusian Military Support for Russia.
Statement from Ukraine's President
According to UATV: During a June 21, 2023 interview on the national telethon 'United News,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Kyiv has taken undisclosed measures aimed at de-escalating Belarus's logistical assistance to Russian forces. He stressed the urgent need to dismantle signal relay stations and halt fuel supplies destined for the Russian military. According to Zelensky, these actions are critical to safeguarding Ukraine's national security. This comes amid heightened tensions following Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko's threats in May 2023 to launch strikes against Ukraine.
Zelensky warned that if Belarus fails to remove its relay systems within one week, Ukraine will take matters into its own hands.
“If he doesn't dismantle them, we will dismantle everything [ourselves]” — Volodymyr Zelensky. This statement was a direct response to Lukashenko's earlier provocations.
Demands on Belarus
The demand for the removal of relay equipment in Belarus was first issued on June 19, 2023. President Zelensky underscored the necessity of cutting off all technical aid, declaring:
“Step number one — no technical support” — Volodymyr Zelensky.
These moves highlight an intensification of Ukrainian diplomacy and military strategy amid the deteriorating security situation in the region. Ukraine's firm stance toward Belarus, a key Russian ally, reflects Kyiv's effort to neutralize threats from neighboring states that could enable aggression. The significance of these measures lies in their potential to constrain Russia's military capabilities in Ukraine and disrupt its broader strategic plans in the area.
