Zelensky and Rutte Discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine: Meeting Details.
Today, August 22, in Kyiv, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who arrived in Ukraine on an unofficial visit. The main topic of discussion between the head of the Ukrainian state and the NATO Secretary General was the joint steps that could provide greater security for Ukraine and all of Europe and bring closer the real end to the war. This is reported by Freedom, referencing the Office of the President of Ukraine (OPU).
According to the president, the first topic of discussion was security guarantees. He stated that the United States is ready to be part of the security guarantees for Ukraine, and active negotiations are currently taking place regarding the specific content of security guarantees for Ukraine.
'The general goal for us is precisely how this is formulated — it is in dialogue, it is with partners — and these should be guarantees article 5-like, that is, like the fifth article of the NATO Treaty. And these are indeed effective security guarantees, this is exactly the result we must achieve. So that there is absolutely clear architecture: which countries help us on the ground, which work for the security of our sky, which guarantee security at sea, assist Ukraine,' — said Volodymyr Zelensky.
Also discussed was the funding of the Ukrainian army — the size and quality of the Ukrainian army, which will be a defense for Ukraine, emphasized the president.
'In all this, it is based on our interaction with partners, on our interaction with NATO, which has already been achieved. The Ukrainian army, in general, our defense and security infrastructure is very seriously integrated into the Alliance's system. There is a lot of bilateral cooperation with NATO member states. We will certainly continue all practical levels of our cooperation with NATO,' — noted the head of state.
The meeting of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Kyiv was dedicated to discussing issues of Ukraine's security and joint steps of NATO to ensure stability in the region. The importance of security guarantees for Ukraine and further cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance to strengthen the country's defense capability was emphasized.
