Diplomatic Crisis Erupts Between Ukraine and Poland

According to Espreso.tv: On May 26, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree granting the honorary designation 'Named after the Heroes of the UPA' to the Special Operations Center 'North.' This decision triggered a sharp backlash from Poland, escalating into a full-blown diplomatic row between the two neighboring nations. The controversy stems from the sensitive historical legacy of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which remains a divisive topic in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

Polish Politicians Respond

Polish officials reacted swiftly and forcefully. Former Polish ambassador to Ukraine, Bartosz Cichocki, returned his Ukrainian Order of Merit, Second Class, in protest. Lech Wałęsa, leader of the 'Freedom' party, publicly removed a Ukrainian flag pin from his jacket, signaling his disapproval. Commenting on the situation, Polish politician Radosław Sikorski stated:

“I believe President Zelensky made a mistake.” — Radosław Sikorski

Additionally, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz declared: 'I will do everything to reverse Zelensky's decision.'

The conflict is deeply rooted in the painful history of the Volyn tragedy, which occurred in 1943–1944 and remains a source of tension between the two countries. Polish President Karol Nawrocki has threatened to strip Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honor, established on November 1, 1705. Donald Tusk, leader of the 'Civic Platform,' expressed concern about the broader implications, warning:

“If we quarrel over the past, someone else will win the future.” — Donald Tusk

This diplomatic standoff highlights how unresolved historical grievances can strain modern political relationships. Both Ukraine and Poland now face the challenge of managing this crisis to prevent further deterioration of their strategic partnership. Without careful dialogue, these bitter memories could undermine future cooperation and mutual trust.
